Environmental Context—Dependent Memory
نویسنده
چکیده
The impact on recall of reinstatement or change of the environment existing at the time of learning is reviewed. While strong and stable effects have been observed for recall, effects on recognition rarely occur because the word itself is a powerful cue (the outshining hypothesis). A classification of context effects is presented and the conditions where such effects are likely to be maximized or minimized are specified.

Environmental context-dependent homophone spelling.
Two experiments provided evidence of environmental context-dependent memory using a homophone spelling test (e.g., Jacoby & Witherspoon, 1982), an implicit, indirect measure of memory (Richardson-Klavehn & Bjork, 1988). Context reinstatement significantly increased priming in both experiments. The finding of environmental context reinstatement effects with this implicit memory test and others (...
متن کاملEnvironmental context-dependent memory: a review and meta-analysis.
To address questions about human memory's dependence on the coincidental environmental contexts in which events occur, we review studies of incidental environmental context-dependent memory in humans and report a meta-analysis. Our theoretical approach to the issue stems from Glenberg's (1997) contention that introspective thought (e.g., remembering, conceptualizing) requires cognitive resource...
متن کاملWhen Unfamiliarity Matters: Changing Environmental Context Between Study and Test Affects Recognition Memory for Unfamiliar Stimuli
Performance in recognition memory has been shown to be relatively insensitive to the effect of environmental context changes between study and test. Recent evidence (P. Dalton, 1993) showed that environmental context changes between study and test affected recognition memory discrimination for unfamiliar stimuli (faces). The present study presented 2 experiments that replicated this finding, re...
متن کاملEnvironmental context effects on episodic memory are dependent on retrieval mode and modulated by neuropsychological status.
Contextual change or constancy between occasions of memory formation and retrieval are commonly assumed to affect retrieval success, yet such effects may be inconsistent, and the processes leading to the pattern of effects are still not well understood. We conducted a systematic investigation of environmental context effects on memory, using a range of materials (common objects, pictures of fam...
متن کاملWhen does a different environmental context make a difference in recognition? A global activation model.
The effects on recognition of changes in environmental context between learning and test are examined. A context effect occurs when memory tests that take place in an environmental context that is different from the learning context produce consistent differences in performance. A formal model of context-dependent recognition within a global activation framework is presented. The model generate...
متن کاملEffects of similarity on environmental context cueing.
Three experiments examined the prediction that context cues which are similar to study contexts can facilitate episodic recall, even if those cues are never seen before the recall test. Environmental context cueing effects have typically produced such small effect sizes that influences of moderating factors, such as the similarity between encoding and retrieval contexts, would be difficult to o...
